Genital Warts Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) are usually sexually transmitted and highly contagious. The warts can be found in and around the vagina, anus, penis, groin and scrotal areas. Some strains of HPV have been associated with cancer of the cervix and other cancers so gynecological examination and pap tests every 6 months are important to monitor the condition. Herpes Herpes -There are two types of herpes simplex viruses: HSV-1 and HSV-2. They are basically the same virus with the type-1 outbreaks appearing most commonly about the mouth, Canker (Cold) Sore and the type-2 affecting the genital or vaginal area. Once infected by herpes, warning sign or symptoms (prodrome) will appear signaling the onset of an outbreak. Prodrome is caused by the virus replicating in the skin. Within two to seven days, sores and fluid-filled blisters appear. The entire first episode may take as long as a month for the sores to scab over and dry up. The herpes virus may lie dormant for long periods of time until triggered by stress, illness, poor nutrition, excessive activity and even sunlight coupled with a weakened immune system, the virus travels around nerve pathways to the site of the outbreak. Herpes is contagious just prior to and during an outbreak. The most contagious period is when the virus is replicating externally prior to an outbreak and during the outbreak when the blisters are filled with fluid. It is almost impossible to contact herpes from inanimate objects such as toilet seats. The herpes virus is spread through direct contact. The soft skin of the genitals, vagina and anus along with most surfaces of the mouth area are easy targets. Kissing, caressing and sexual contact with a person in the contagious stage will spread the disease. WARNING Salicylic acid - Prolonged use over large areas, especially in children pregnant or nursing mothers,and those patients with significant renal or hepatic impairment, could result in salicylism. Concomitant use of other drugs which may contribute to elevated serum salicylate levels should be avoided where the potential for toxicity is present. In children under 12 years of age and those patients with renal or hepatic impairment, the area to be treated should be limited and the patient monitored closely for signs of salicylate toxicity: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of hearing, tinnitus, lethargy, hyperpnea, diarrhea, psychic disturbances. In the event of salicylic acid toxicity, the use of Salicylic acid gel should be discontinued. Fluids should be administered to promote urinary excretion. Treatment with sodium bicarbonate (oral or intravenous) should be instituted as appropriate Pregnancy This medicine may be absorbed through the mother's skin. Salicylic acid has not been studied in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have shown that salicylic acid causes birth defects when given orally in doses about 6 times the highest dose recommended for topical use in humans. Before using this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant, especially if you will be using salicylic acid on large areas of your body. Children Young children may be at increased risk of unwanted effects because of increased absorption of salicylic acid through the skin. Also, young children may be more likely to get skin irritation from salicylic acid. Salicylic acid should not be applied to large areas of the body, used for long periods of time, or used under occlusive dressing (air-tight covering, such as kitchen plastic wrap) in infants and children [picture] |
